Spring Cleaning – Chase Away Winter

MARCH 3, 2017 in UNCATEGORIZED

The soft breezes of spring have begun to warm the air. When the windows are open, the scent of daffodils, tulips, and hydrangeas fill the air, and we emerge from a mode of semi-hibernation, it feels like the perfect time to get our places in tiptop shape. It is time for spring cleaning! Here is a handy list of chores that will get your home feeling crisp and clean.

Fabrics

  • For washable fabrics, a quick turn through the washing machine and dryer will be sufficient. Be sure to check fabric care instructions first!
  • Vacuum upholstered pieces and mattresses.

Walls and woodwork

  • For most vertical surfaces, a simple wipe down or dusting will do. Believe it or not, dust, soot, and other dirt do stick to a vertical surface.

Floors

  • Move furniture for a deep vacuum session.
  • Consider cleaning carpets, or hiring a company to do so.
  • Follow manufacturer or installer directions for cleaning hardwoods and tile surfaces.

Ceilings

  • Get the sneaky cobwebs out of the corners.
  • Use an old pillowcase to pull the dust off of the ceiling fan blades, one blade at a time.

Windows

  • Wipe down the sills, and wipe the blinds with a damp cloth.
  • To “dust” drapes – a quick spin on the air only cycle in the dryer with a damp towel to collect the loosened dust can give them a decent cleaning. To avoid having to press them, rehang each panel immediately.
  • If you take time to clean the window glass inside, make the effort to clean the outside as well. It makes a world of difference.
  • This is a good time to get screens repaired if winter’s winds have caused damage.

Oft Forgotten Spots

  • Make it a habit each spring to get behind the refrigerator and clean the condenser coils. Doing so adds years to the appliance’s life span.
  • Air return vents and central heat/air vents need a quick dusting or their turn with the vacuum cleaner.
  • Check out the space above the kitchen cabinets. It is amazing how much dust collects up there!
  • Wash and sterilize trash receptacles.
