Milan, a city known for high-end fashion and impeccable style, recently hosted the 56th Salone del Mobile Milano, a global furnishing and design event highlighting more than 2,000 exhibitors in 20 pavilions. Attendees from 165 different countries visited the Milan Fairgrounds to explore the best in design, modern innovation, and cutting edge trends in home fashion.

The Salone del Mobile is best described as

A showcase that has always mixed business with culture, shaping the history of design and furnishing yesterday, today and tomorrow. A global platform for truly top-notch products with the emphasis on innovation.

The Salone is known for quality goods, innovative technology, and deep creativity in product lines and home solutions. It is a place where the tried and true are celebrated and the innovative are explored.

In 2017, no one theme, color, or style stood out as the trendsetter of the event; however, the “watchword” of the showcase was contemporary elegance. Other concepts of note at the 2017 Salone del Mobile Milano included:

Artisan craftsmanship – A true admiration for handcrafted products, many fashioned by Italian companies that have handed down their techniques generation after generation. In these pieces, imperfection is the marker of uniqueness.

Containers – Storage solutions are always welcome, and when they can also be stunningly beautiful, all the better! This year’s offerings at the Salone highlighted the functionality of modular pieces, with myriad combinations, wrapped up in stunningly designed form.

Nostalgia – Old-fashioned nostalgia also held court this year. From Fifties inspiration to re-editions of classic pieces of years gone by, product after product honored the echoes of the past.

“Soft Cocoon Effect” – The world can be a harsh place. When furnishings can offer respite, soft and enveloping, home can be a reprieve from the hectic pace of modern life.

“Quest for the True Essence” – Getting back to the function of a piece, the ideotype of the object, offers a simple elegance, a sophistication. Using materials with a nod to the natural, the organic is another indicator of this philosophy.
