Design by the Numbers

While design is most definitely an art, there is always an element of science (and thereby, math) involved in making all the right selections that bring a room together. If you feel the need to start scrambling for your calculator, never fear – we have it all figured out for you.

Remember the Rule of Three

  • In visual arts, the brain perceives odd numbers as more appealing, and while one is an odd number, when it comes to design, it just stands solo. To capture the charm of an odd number, three is where it begins. Other odd numbers work as well, but be careful not to overdo.
  • Build vignettes with three items (they need not be identical, nor the same type object). The goal is to build a visual triangle. To add interest, consider using items of differing heights.
  • The Rule of Three works for collections, wall displays, and even color choices.

Edit, edit, edit.

  • Coco Chanel is credited with saying, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” She was an icon of style who knew that less is more, that scaling back a bit makes the accessories still worn shine even brighter.
  • To apply Coco’s wisdom in a room, look for things that are too big, too many in number, too much – and subtract them.
  • Be tough when making those choices, and the room will instantly feel more open, more relaxing, as if it can breathe.

Sometimes add.

  • We don’t mean to sound contradictory, but sometimes the answer is to ADD something rather than subtract.
  • When a room feels bland, blasé, and boring – put in a statement piece, pick out a pop of color, or make a bold move and create an accent wall with some stunning wallpaper or a dramatic color of paint.
  • One more bit of décor wisdom is that every room needs a little bit of black. If something seems like it is missing, add in a black frame around some art or go big and bring in something larger in the inky tones, and notice how the room then feels tethered or grounded.
